Why Do Cockroaches Enter the Home?

Common causes of cockroach infestations and practical tips to protect your home.

Why do we see them in the kitchen?

Cockroaches seek moisture, warmth, and food. Crumbs in the kitchen, open bins, and water pooling create an ideal environment. Gaps under doors, window frames, and plumbing penetrations are common entry points.

In the TRNC, activity increases especially in summer; infestations spreading from a neighbouring unit in apartment blocks are also common.

What you can do right away at home

  • Store food sealed and wipe down counters every night.
  • Keep bins closed and fix leaks under the sink.
  • Check door and window seals.
  • Shop-bought gel may be temporary; heavy infestations require professional gel treatment.

When is treatment necessary?

If you see more than one cockroach per day, notice movement when you enter the kitchen at night, or find egg cases (oothecae), it is time for an inspection. Gel treatment targets the colony; spraying alone does not provide a lasting solution.
